What is CORE?
C.O.R.E Academy provides an opportunity for your student to master a core subject (or subjects) taught by enthusiastic, knowledgeable Christian teachers in a supportive group environment. These classes have an emphasis on strict academic standards. Students have material presented to them on class day, and are given assignments and projects to complete during the week. This process provides college-preparatory assistance that is consistent with and supportive of the parent's desire to continue investing in their children at home.CORE is a great help to those parents who may face subjects that are outside of their "academic comfort zone" as their student enters high school. Through CORE, a parent can be a partner to the student's qualified, dedicated instructor by giving their student additional guidance at home to keep them on track in their academically challenging curriculum. Students learn valuable time management, study, self-discipli ne, teamwork and leadership skills in a nurturing group setting. CORE classes provide structure and accountability as homeschool students transition to college and beyond.
Reasons why families may choose CORE classes:
- expose students to a variety of teaching styles
- teacher is an enthusiastic expert in the subject
- receive independent evaluation of students academic progress
- parent lacks interest or knowledge in subject area
- strengthen weak subject
- provide challenge and enrichment in favorite subject
- transition older students to group setting in order to spend more time with younger children
- build or reinforce time and study management skills in preparation for college or workplace
- share, witness, support and encourage as student develops life goals.
CORE classes are open to both Crossroads and non-Crossroads area homeschooled students. For non-Crossroads families, please provide a letter of reference from a pastor or homeschool administrator with your registration materials. For classes with pre-requisites, please provide a transcript or sample of work. Thank you!
CORE Academy classes will be held in the Community Presbyterian Church Educational Building in Moody, Alabama. Generally, lower level (grades 7 - 10), English and Social Studies classes will meet one day per week (Tuesdays). Spanish, and upper level math and science classes (grades 11 - 12) will meet two days per week (Tuesdays and Fridays). Students may register for one or more classes based on their academic needs and goals. Grade levels are approximate -- there are some prerequisites, and some classes may require a placement test before registration can be completed.
Not all classes are offered every year. Schedule is dependent on teacher availability and student interest. Please see the published schedule for details.
